Annie Keki – Hidden Structures

Research and development in metal, clay and mixed media, exploring internal supports, tension and the quiet engineering inside objects.

About my current practice

I am a mixed-media visual artist transitioning into sculpture, working with metal, clay, plaster and wire. Recent work focuses on how structures hold together: hidden joins, internal supports, and the points where materials bend, fail or are repaired.

Over the last year I have developed plaster maquettes, ceramic reliefs and a series of metal studies including cubes, riveted plates and formed spheres. These tests form the foundation of my project Hidden Structures: Developing a Sculptural Language.

Recent work – metal

Copper cube study
Copper Cube Study
Hand-fabricated cube, soldered and filed | 2025
Precision exercise in forming and joining sheet copper; informs future sculptural volumes and structural assemblies.
Silver sphere study
Silver Sphere Development
Raised and soldered silver form | 2025
Exploring hammering, dishing and concealed seams; a step towards more complex three-dimensional forms in metal.
Riveted plate tests
Riveted Plate Tests
Copper & brass, drilled and riveted | 2025
Flush and surface rivets used to test mechanical joins, tolerance and the visual presence of fixing points.

Recent work – ceramics & mixed media

Ceramic relief panel
Ceramic Relief Panel
Clay body, carved & incised | 2025
Surface and line studies that feed directly into metal scoring, folding and structural pattern.
Smoke fired form
Smoke-Fired Form
Clay, smoke firing | 2025
Testing how heat, carbon and stress mark the surface; connected to ideas of wear, repair and hidden histories.
Plaster and clay maquettes
Family Maquettes
Plaster and clay studies | 2025
Small-scale models towards a sculptural series exploring interdependence, balance and quiet forms of support.

Project focus – Hidden Structures

This research and development period will focus on:

  • Developing advanced skills in metal forming, joinery and articulation.
  • Testing how clay and metal research inform each other in sculptural work.
  • Scaling up from maquettes and small tests to mid-scale sculptural forms.
  • Building a clear, confident sculptural language around hidden supports and internal structures.

The works shown on this page are all from the last 12–18 months and are directly relevant to this development.
