ANNIE KÈKI

Born in London, Annie Kèki is a visual artist working in 2 and 3D, her work is informed by life. Memories, characters and obscured details of her own life feature to inspire and question what is real and what is fake. Over recent years a desire to explore subtext, the unspoken and downright false representation have informed her process.

Self-taught with a background in textiles it was only in her 50’s, following the death of her mother that art became a language to explore what that death exposed for the first time. Questioning her own right to give voice to unspoken family history, a reticence to speak to people who had remained silent on subjects for decades gave rise to a practice of exploring the conversations in her mind with canvas.

I moved seamlessly from folding fabric to laying my thoughts onto it. It felt very natural and comforting to be working with cloth; albeit in a very different relationship.

I now love my practice of conversation with materials, finding silence can be deafening and drenching. My work continues to develop how we represent ourselves to others, how we edit ourselves for wider consumption and how we live with ourselves in the shadows we create.

Actively not seeking to learn the rules the work evolves through organic growth, observation, reflection and the artists own desire to learn about her life and how it is impacted by learning.

The work tells me to stop, when it is finished; and I do.
